RurikArtist Statement:  My work has been called “Dark Pop,” as it focuses on manipulating imagery to fit a particular, and often non-rectangular surface to create a sense of intimacy between the viewer and the object. I use a photorealistic style because I believe in the beauty of reality and the details present in every object. However, I prefer to manipulate my images, through color, scale, juxtaposition or contrast to create something more than just a painting of a photograph.

Bio:  I work as both a fine artist and a freelance designer. My personal work utilizes a photorealistic style to present imagery that’s been called “Dark Pop,” since I enjoy painting simple things and adding a bit of humor.  My freelance work has included working on CD and magazine covers, posters, murals, product illustrations, robot toy box designs, painted motorcycles and surfboards, professional photo retouching and creating two of the “Peanuts on Parade” public statues.  I am a graduate of the U of MN-Duluth, with a BA in Creative Writing and a BFA in Visual Art. I went on to earn an MA at St. Cloud State University. I’ve enjoyed a very diverse career in art.
